news intro

Endometriosis Health Awareness Month is observed every March to raise awareness about this chronic and painful condition that affects millions of women worldwide. Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, causing pain, infertility, and other health problems.

During this month, the medical community and advocacy organizations come together to educate the public about endometriosis, its symptoms, and its impact on women's health. The goal is to increase awareness of the condition, promote early diagnosis and treatment, and support women who are living with endometriosis.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition that affects women during their reproductive years. It occurs when the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows outside of the uterus. This tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, or other areas in the pelvis.

The tissue outside of the uterus still responds to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. This can cause pain and inflammation, scarring, and adhesions in the affected areas. Women with endometriosis may experience chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, pain during sex, and infertility.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition, meaning that it can last for many years or even a lifetime. It is estimated to affect 1 in 10 women of reproductive age worldwide, and yet it often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Endometriosis can cause a wide range of symptoms, which can vary from woman to woman. Some common symptoms include:

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
  • Pain during sex (dyspareunia)
  • Painful bowel movements or urination
  • Heavy periods or irregular bleeding
  • Fatigue
  • Infertility

These symptoms can have a significant impact on a woman's quality of life, affecting her ability to work, socialize, and engage in everyday activities.
