UAE HEALTH AUTHORITIES PROVIDE DOS AND DON’TS FOR CLOTH MASKS

If you have been wondering how you can safely wear a face mask made of fabric, the UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has provided detailed guidelines on all you need to know.

A fabric mask can protect others around you, something referred to as “source control” by the World Health Organization (WHO).

To protect yourself and prevent the spread of COVID-19, MOHAP also advised people to maintain social distance, clean hands frequently and thoroughly and avoid touching their face and mask.

Face masks help in preventing asymptomatic carriers from spreading the disease, protecting others.

However, coupled with regular hand washing, social distancing and other hygiene measures you can ensure your safety, along with others'.

A fabric mask can be made at home by ensuring it has three different types of layers.

  • An outer layer of a non-absorbent material.
  • A middle layer of a non-woven material.
  • An inner layer of an absorbent material.

Do not use elastic materials for making masks, as they can stretch during use, the filtration capacity of the mask will be highly reduced.

  • Elastic materials are also prone to quicker wear and tear
  • Using fabrics that are too tightly woven may also hinder breathability.
  • Always do a breathability check if you are making your own face mask.
